Rain, light snow slows morning commute on LI

An early-morning band of heavy, wet snow is falling on Long Island Wednesday, causing slick road conditions and limiting visibility in areas of Suffolk, Nassau and Queens.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said the precipitation is expected to continue into Thursday afternoon.

A coastal flood advisory has been issued for South Shore bays and areas along the Long Island Sound, with forecasters warning a low pressure area East of the Carolinas will track to “a point several hundred miles southeast of Montauk Point” by Wednesday night and will produce “strong northeast winds over the region.”

The good news is that, unlike recent storms, Long Island is not expected to get much — if any — snow accumulation as a result of this storm. The total daytime accumulation, in fact, is expected to be less than one inch, forecasters said.

However, that won’t keep the storm from making life miserable Wednesday. Winds in the low 20-mph range — with gusts as high as 31 mph — figure to turn this into a real early-March storm and temperatures dropping into the high 20s Wednesday night threaten to cause black ice conditions overnight into Thursday morning.

Forecasters are calling for sun Friday and for a warm and sunny Saturday and Sunday, when clear skies and temperatures approaching the 50-degree mark are expected.
