Rain moves out but airport delays remain

By Thursday afternoon, rain had pretty much cleared the area, with roughly a half-inch to an inch reported on Long Island.

The National Weather Service said 0.68 of an inch was recorded at Long Island MacArthur Airport; 1.09 in Upton; 0.49 in Farmingdale; and 0.55 in Westhampton Beach.

Low ceilings were causing average arrival delays of about an hour at LaGuardia Airport, which was also seeing some departure delays, as were Kennedy and MacArthur airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's website.

Cloud cover may be thinning, meaning there could be some sunny breaks, but don't expect full-fledged bright sunshine, said Tim Morrin, weather service meteorologist based in Upton.

After the system moves east, high pressure builds starting Friday night and into late Sunday. That means dry weather for the weekend, with clear sunny skies and temperatures Saturday and Sunday into the low 80s, the service said.

Beach temperatures should be a bit cooler, as sea breezes both Saturday and Sunday "will knock temps down several degrees in the afternoon at coastal areas," the service said.

All in all, Morrin said, look for "really nice, early June weather."
