Long Island is facing rain and possible thunderstorms Monday afternoon and overnight into Tuesday following a warm and dry Father’s Day weekend and first day of summer.
The National Weather Service forecast a mostly dry morning on Monday, followed by showers in the late morning and early afternoon.
Meteorologist Brian Ciemnecki said the chance of rain will gradually increase during the afternoon and evening and Long Island will see moderate to local heavy showers at times.
"There could be some thunder along with it," Ciemnecki said.
Temperatures will reach the mid-to-upper-70s on Monday, although it "may feel muggy with all the moisture in the air," Ciemnecki said.
The weather service warned of a high risk of "life-threatening" rip currents at New York City, Nassau, and western Suffolk beaches Monday for anyone entering the surf zone.
"Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf," the service said in a statement. "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water."
Rainfall will continue into Tuesday morning, with highs in the upper 70s.
Nassau County can expect between 1 and 1.5 inch rainfall totals while Suffolk can expect about 1 inch. There are no major flooding concerns for Long Island from this storm, forecasters said.
Wednesday and Thursday may be your best time for outdoor activities, as they will offer a reprieve from rain, with mostly dry conditions.
Temperatures will also increase, with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
A chance of showers will return Friday into Saturday. Conditions should clear for a dry and warm Sunday.
