Hold onto your umbrellas, Long Island.

The National Weather Service forecasts showers to continue throughout the week until Mother’s Day, adding to a pattern of consistent precipitation this month.

James Connolly, service meteorologist, said periods of rain would occur into Tuesday night.

A slight chance of respite may occur Wednesday morning, but chances of showers are still likely throughput the day. Highs will stay in the mid to upper 60s and rise into the upper 70s on Thursday.

Thursday’s forecast is similar to Wednesday, and so they are the best days to make outdoor plans, Connolly said.

"Tomorrow and Thursday might be your best days," he said.

As a system moves back on Friday, a higher chance of widespread rain will occur during the day and exit on Saturday. Connolly said temperatures would decrease to a high of 60 on Friday.

"The timing is a bit uncertain, because this is far away, it’s a slow moving system," Connolly said.

The service recorded .91 inches so far for May in Islip — a normal average for the month while Long Island is 4 inches below average for the year.

Since March 1, Long Island is about an inch and a half below normal in rainfall, Connolly said.

Rain should be out of the picture for a dry Mother’s Day, with highs in the low 70s.

"Right now, it looks like fair weather for Mother’s Day," Connolly said.
