It's safe to head to the beach this weekend - just make sure you know how you're getting there.

According to the National Weather Service, Long Islanders can expect record highs, with temperatures hitting the 80s. The warm weather will remain throughout the weekend, meteorologist Matt Scalora said.

Last month was the warmest April on Long Island since records started being kept in 1984, with an average temperature of 53.4 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The previous record was in April 2002, when the average temperature was 52.2 degrees, Scalora said.

George Gorman, deputy regional director for Long Island state parks, said workers have placed about 150,000 cubic yards of sand along the beachfront of Robert Moses State Park. He said they will continue the project, aimed at rebuilding the beach.

By Monday, temperatures are expected be in the 70s, Scalora said.

But don't head to the beach too fast.

If you're planning a trip to Long Beach, you may have to add up to 34 minutes to your travel time.

Long Island Rail Road train service between the Long Beach and Valley Stream stations has been suspended for Saturday and Sunday as work continues on the construction of two new railroad bridges over Powell Creek and Hog Island Channel.

Buses have been set up to shuttle passengers between the two locations. Eastbound, customers must transfer to buses at Valley Stream to travel to stations between Lynbrook and Long Beach.

Westbound, customers must board buses at stations between Long Beach and Lynbrook bound for Valley Stream. Buses will depart up to 33 minutes earlier than scheduled train times.
