Swells from Hurricane Cristobal mean an enhanced risk of dangerous rip currents and high surf Wednesday for Long Island's Atlantic beaches, the National Weather Service said.

Although the hurricane is forecast to pass well to the south and east, posing no threat to Long Island, the long period swells are expected to generate an enhanced risk of dangerous rip currents from Wednesday through at least part of Friday, the service's Upton office said.

Waves and surf between 4 to 6 feet also are possible Wednesday and building to 6 to 8 feet Wednesday evening and into Thursday, the service said.

Its high surf advisory runs until 10 p.m. Thursday.

The risk for rip currents also includes beaches in Queens and Brooklyn.
