Saturday is expected to be the only beach day of the weekend for Long Islanders, as today's hot and humid temperatures could be swept away by severe thunderstorms throughout the day on Sunday.

The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s on Saturday with only a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms north and west of New York City, said meteorologist Mike Layer in Upton.

But, beachgoers should be careful in the waters on Saturday, Layer warns. The National Weather Service said there is a moderate risk for rip currents at ocean-facing beaches on Saturday.

Those rip currents are expected to intensify on Sunday as a strong cold front comes in, bringing with it severe thunderstorms and localized heavy rainfall by late afternoon for parts of Nassau and Suffolk, Layer said.

The storms, which could continue through Monday morning, will also bring heavy winds north and west of New York City, the service said.
