Long Islanders may have to contend with scattered thunderstorms this weekend as the summer vacaation season nears its end.

Saturday's forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s in eastern Suffolk County and slightly higher in western Nassau, according to Jay Engel, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

A slight chance of thunderstorms is possible in eastern Suffolk on Saturday afternoon and evening, when the temperature drops into the upper 60s, Engel said.

The weather service also said there is a moderate risk of rip currents at Long Island beaches Saturday. Rip currents are powerful water channels flowing quickly away from shore, the service said.

Sunday's forecast calls for temperatures topping out at about 80 with cloudy skies and a 30 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms after noon, Engel said. The chance for rain continues Sunday night as temperatures drop into the upper 60s.

Monday's back-to-work forecast calls for a high of 80 with a slight chance of thunderstorms.
