Saturday's chill to give way to a rainy, warm Sunday with highs possibly in the low 50s

Long Islanders will need to stay bundled up in scarves and gloves Saturday but should get some welcome relief from the cold on Sunday as temperatures could reach the low 50s -- although with a steady rain, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

Temperatures throughout the Island are not expected to get above the mid 20s on Saturday, according to Weather Service meteorologist John Murray.

But, a high pressure front will move offshore Saturday night and southerly winds will prevent temperatures from dipping any more in the overnight hours, Murray said.

Rain will begin after 8 a.m. Sunday across the Island and should taper off in late evening. Wind gusts could reach up to 25 mph during the afternoon and evening hours.

Total precipitation could be between three-quarters and an inch and a half of rain, according to forecasters.

Sunday's temperature is expected to range from the upper 40s to the low 50s -- a dramatic change in less than 24 hours. The average high temperature is only 38 degrees.

"It's going to be a very significant jump in temperature," Murray said.
