Saturday's temperatures below normal on Long Island, but real chill expected next week

Saturday may be chilly, but next week temperatures will drop to the mid 40s as cold air from a western Pacific super typhoon pushes through the region, forecasters said.
The remnants of Typhoon Nuri, which curved away from Asia to the northeast and were headed to the Bering Sea, brought near hurricane-strength winds to Alaska's Aleutian Islands on Friday.
Sustained winds of 70 mph and gusts up to 96 mph were recorded on Shemya Island, weather officials said.
Joseph Pollina, meteorologist at the National Weather Service's office in Upton, said remnants from Nuri are "helping to drive the colder air that's locked up in northern Canada south to the region."
Saturday temperatures on Long Island were below normal for the period, he said. For example, Islip's high is typically in the mid 50s and the low in the upper 30s, but Saturday the high is expected to be only in the upper 40s, Pollina said.
The rest of the weekend is set to get warmer, in the mid 50s, on Sunday, the upper 50s to 60 in some areas on Monday and slightly above the normal upper 50s on Tuesday, said Pollina.
But the chill factor sets in on Wednesday.
"We have a cold front approaching the area late Tuesday into Wednesday, and then [it] pushes offshore Wednesday night," Pollina said. "That's going to be bringing colder air."
Forecasters predict Wednesday's high in low 50s and Thursday's high in mid 40s on Long Island, he said. Rain on Wednesday morning is expected in association with the cold front, he said, but wind gusts are expected to be only 20 mph on Wednesday.
"It's not extremely windy," Pollina said. "We're not forecasting it to be as windy as it was on Nov. 2, when we had 52 mph gusts in Islip."
The aftermath of Nuri is also expected to freeze much of the Lower 48 states next week, with snow falling in the northern Rockies and northern Plains, forecasters have said.
