Long Islanders can expect windy and chilly conditions for most of Saturday before a gradual warm-up begins with seasonal temperatures in the 60s for the start of next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Those attending weekend events like the 43rd annual Oyster Fest at Audrey Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay will likely need a coat, but no umbrella. Any rain in the area has cleared out and no precipitation was expected Saturday afternoon, said Bill Goodman, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Upton.

But overnight temperatures will drop into the upper 30s in most areas — and to near freezing in the Pine Barrens — in what will be the "coolest air mass" of the season, Goodman said.

The high temperature for Sunday will still be "rather cool" in the mid-50s, he said, although sunny skies are projected.

"And then early next week we warm up," he said.

An offshore storm will develop next week off the Carolinas and "sit out there for a few days," Goodman said. The storm is not likely to bring rain to Long Island but could lead to some coastal issues like minor flooding, he said.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently projected Long Island will be in store for a warmer but wetter winter than usual, which it attributed to a "super El Niño."
