Scattered snow showers are expected to continue into early evening for most of Long Island, possibility lasting overnight on the East End, the National Weather Service said.

The forecast calls for less than an inch of snow, with a low chance of 1 to 2 inches in isolated areas on the East End, said Lauren Nash, weather service meteorologist based in Upton.

While snow showers are not widespread, drivers during the evening commute "could run into patches of light snow," making roads wet and lowering visibility, she said.

As for Friday, look for a sun-and-cloud mix, mostly sun, with temperatures around 40, said Dan Hofmann, also a meteorologist in Upton. Weekend temperatures are expected in the mid-40s.

Meteorologists have their eyes on a coastal system for Sunday night into Monday, which would be "a mostly snow event," Nash said, though details such as amounts are uncertain. As of late Thursday afternoon, she said, the system did not look to be significant.
