A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Nassau County until 11 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service said.

"Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening ahead of an approaching cold front," the weather service said in a special weather statement.

Some of the storms may produce heavy rain, high wind gusts, frequent lightning and hail, forecasters said.

There's also a chance of showers and thunderstorms in Suffolk, but it's less likely they will be severe, the weather service said.

Thunderstorms are causing delays on arrivals at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Arrival delays at Kennedy are averaging 1 hour, 12 minutes. Arrival delays at LaGuardia are averaging 1 hour, 18 minutes, and there are also average departure delays of up to 2 hours, the FAA said. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines to see if their flights are affected.

The approaching cold front is expected to drop overnight temperatures into the low 70s and later in the week into the mid-to-upper 60s, forecasters said. Highs much of the week are expected to be in the mid-80s.

Showers will be possible late in the week, as well, the weather service said Monday.
