Showers on LI expected to move out by midnight

Showers and isolated thunderstorms hit parts of Long Island late Tuesday afternoon, but those showers are weakening and should move out by midnight, the National Weather Service said.

There were reports of small hail at Kennedy Airport and in Rego Park, and rumbles of thunder and heavy rain -- and possible brief small hail -- in Nassau and Suffolk, weather service meteorologist Joey Picca said.

A special weather statement had warned of small hail and winds gusting up to 40 mph.

Picca said brief gusts of 35 to 40 mph were registered at a weather station in Point O' Woods on Fire Island.

Shortly after 5 p.m., showers were moving along the South Shore of Suffolk County, he said.
