Showers Monday, possible Tuesday, then temps climb into 80s, National Weather Service says

Cloudy skies and possible rain will give way to warmer summerlike weather later in the workweek, the National Weather Service said Monday.

Long Island can expect temperatures in the mid-70s, a slight chance of showers and humid conditions for most of Monday and Tuesday. By noon Monday, some spotty showers with brief heavy downpours had been reported.

By Wednesday, temperatures climb into the 80s, with mostly clear sunny skies.

The service's Upton office said there's a slight chance of light showers in the morning Monday, with a breezy south wind from 8 to 13 mph and increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Some gusts could be as strong as 36 mph.

Then there's potentially a second bout of showers late Monday and into Tuesday morning. Chance of rain Monday all the way through Tuesday night ranges from 30 to 40 percent.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said the "hit-and-miss showers and thunderstorms" are possible until as late as 10 p.m. Tuesday.

"When thunderstorms develop we could have some heavy downpours," he said.

Tuesday calls for more breezy conditions, as the winds shift southwest from 14 to 17 mph; some gusts could be up to 28 mph.

Hoffman said gradual clearing continues into Wednesday morning, and temperatures will begin to warm.

The forecast calls for highs near 80 on Wednesday, and slightly higher Thursday and Friday, Hoffman said.

"Temperatures this week will be average to above average," he said. "Much warmer than last week."
