In Huntington, it wasn't looking like the first full day of spring. Officials at the National Weather Service said the snow won't accumulate across Long Island, but that we can expect traces of snow again on Wednesday and Thursday. (March 21, 2011) Credit: Peter Walden Sr.

Glad the rough winter is behind us? Well, don't look now, Long Island -- on the first full day of spring it was snowing outside.

The snow didn't accumulate, officials at the National Weather Service said. Nor did it last long, weather service meteorologist Pete Wichrowski said Monday -- suggesting that a warmer, drier air mass is now over New Jersey and headed our way, bringing clearing skies Monday afternoon into Tuesday. However, it is a reminder of the nasty, cold, bitter winter we're leaving behind.

And, the weather service said, we will get traces of snow Wednesday and Thursday.

"It's the first day of spring, but still we can see this," Wichrowski said. "It isn't unusual. You can get snow in late March, even April. We're not quite out of the season."

Officially, the spring began Sunday -- though Monday marks the first full day.

The weather service said we can expect rain, with trace amounts of snow, into the afternoon with a high temperature in the mid-40s expected later in the day. Tuesday will be sunny, as mostly cloudy skies overnight clear into the afternoon -- when temperatures rise into the upper 40s and low 50s, the weather service said.

However, Wednesday brings another chance of snow and so does Thursday before sunny skies return on Friday.
