Dense fog made for treacherous early morning commutes Monday, limiting visibility for drivers who are being urged to slow down.

The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory for Nassau and Suffolk until 9 a.m. The advisory warned "visibilities will frequently be reduced to one-quarter mile or less. If driving, slow down, use your low-beam headlights and leave plenty of distance between cars in case a sudden stop is needed."

The humidity was 100 percent and temperature was expected to climb into the low 50s -- and, forecasters said there is a chance of rain and sleet Monday evening. That precipitation could freeze overnight, when temperatures are expected to fall into the low 30s, and forecasters said snow and sleet are possible Tuesday night into Wednesday -- when rain and snow is considered "likely."

No significant accumulations are expected, though, though lower temperatures are expected later in the week.
