The possibility of snow has returned to Long Island’s near-term forecast.

The National Weather Service said snow showers are likely late Friday into the overnight Saturday across Long Island as a cold snap returns to the region.

Saturday and Sunday will bring another batch of frigid temperatures, the weather service said.

So far this winter, the Island's measuring station at Islip has gotten 27.4 inches so far, which is 11.4 inches above normal; 16 inches is expected typically.

"It does seem like a very snowy winter," said the weather service meteorologist James Tomasini.
"The past couple of years have been a little bit warmer in the winter and a little less snowy," he said, and so "It’s making this feel even more amplified."

This weekend is expected to see an inch of snow across Long Island, he said.

Before that, Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be relatively better, with daytime high temperatures hovering around 30 but dipping into the low teens at night.

That pattern starts to change Friday, when partly sunny skies give way to increasing clouds in the evening, forecasters say.

Friday's snow showers could continue Saturday, which is expected to be blustery and cold with a high near 24. Sunday will be even colder, forecasters said.
