Spring has sprung. But Long Islanders' winter coats may still come in handy come nightfall.
The high temperature in Islip reached 49 degrees Friday afternoon, just slightly above the average high temperature for March 20, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and possible overnight thunderstorms will begin around 9 p.m. Friday on Long Island, weather service meteorologist Jay Engle told Newsday. Fog will linger from overnight through early Saturday morning. The low will be about 42.
Saturday will be mostly sunny with high temperatures in the mid-50s, according to the weather service. Sunday's forecast calls for similar temperatures, but also for clouds and a chance of rain as the day draws to an end with a low of around 39. That chance of rain will linger through Monday.
"It's mostly Sunday night into Monday morning," Engle said of the anticipated precipitation. "That's when most of it's going to fall."
Monday afternoon's highs are expected to reach just below 50, according to the weather service, but temps will dip to a low of 31 at night. Temperatures will stick to the mid-40s on Tuesday and Wednesday and there will be ample sunshine both days. But coats, hats and gloves may be in order at night, when temperatures will drop to the low 30s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
