Spring swing: Temps on Long Island drop after record-breaker

Just a day after Long Islanders basked in record-breaking 80-degree weather, temperatures steadily dropped Wednesday courtesy of cooler air off the ocean, the National Weather Service said.

Around 2 p.m., the temperature was 71 degrees at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, where a record of 82 degrees was set Tuesday. Within three hours, by 5 p.m., the temperature was down 17 degrees to 54.

Wednesday evening, the cold front was ushered in with thunderstorms for some areas.

As for Thursday, expect drizzle or light showers in the morning, Vaz said, with temperatures in the lower- to mid-50s, which is slightly below normal.

As for the dramatic shift from a record-breaking high to below-normal temperatures, Vaz said that's spring for you.

"You do get these swings" with the transition of seasons, he said.
