Warmer temperatures are on the way for the weekend, with a 70 degree Saturday on tap, forecasters say.

Clear skies and temperatures in the low 50s greeted fans for the Yankees' home opener Thursday in the Bronx. After a low chance for overnight showers, Friday will be sunny with a high of 57.

Then Saturday dawns with a high of 70, or possibly higher, according to the National Weather Service. It will still be breezy with gusts up to 26 mph.

Saturday night there is another low chance for showers. Sunday's forecast calls for a high of 55 and partly sunny skies in the morning before turning cloudy and bringing possible rain in the afternoon.

The weather service has also warned of brush fire danger. It said the current "low relative humidity values" combined with what could be strong winds Thursday will create "an elevated risk" of brush fires across Long Island and much of the tristate area.

"Exercise caution handling any potential ignition sources, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches," the weather service said. "Any fires that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly."

'Success is zero deaths on the roadway' Newsday reporters spent this year examining the risks on Long Island's roads, where traffic crashes over a decade killed more than 2,100 people and seriously injured more than 16,000. This documentary is a result of that newsroom-wide effort.
