Rainfall tapers off in evening, but Jeter's farewell may be wet

Thursday's rainfall on Long Island by late in the afternoon was mostly light, amounting to less than half an inch, forecasters said.

Following the morning's steadier rain, "showers have become more scattered in nature and amounts overall have been light," the National Weather Service said on its Facebook page. The system remained "disorganized and we only expect scattered light showers with pockets of moderate rain through the afternoon," tapering off as the evening progresses.

Both evening commuters and fans at Yankee Stadium for Derek Jeter's farewell home game may be confronting light, intermittent rain and drizzle, though no torrential downpour, said David Stark, weather service meteorologist based in Upton. Evening temperatures are expected to remain in the low 60s, he said.

As for Friday, "it looks beautiful," Stark said, with clouds decreasing in the morning and temperatures in the low to mid-70s. The weekend, too, looks promising, with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 70s to near 80.
