Warmer temperatures have helped melt the leftover snow and ice that hit Long Island in Saturday's storm, but colder air is coming in already and drivers should be prepared for black ice into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Weather service officials warned of the possibility of "black ice" -- a thin coat of ice on the roadways -- for Sunday night into early Monday morning.

"In places that have seen more snow, where there is still any standing water, there is potential for black ice," said David Starke, a meteorologist for the service based in Upton. "It's something to keep an eye on when you're on the road, especially after midnight right through the morning commute."

The forecast had been for a high of 41 degrees Sunday but, Lauren Nash of the weather service said, "It looks as though the wind shifted, and we expect to be in the mid-30s today."

Overall, snow totals from the system that hung around the Island all day Saturday ranged from 2 to 5 inches in Suffolk. In Nassau, there was less on the South Shore but the North Shore got 4 to 6 inches, Nash said. However, between 8 and 11 p.m. Saturday, the snow began turning to rain.

Aside from some leftover drizzle, the storm is gone, Nash said. Sunday and Monday will be dry, and there is a chance for snow Tuesday, Starke said.

A "fairly quick moving" snow system will likely enter the area near sunrise on Tuesday, that could leave anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of snow, Starke said.

.

"After that, we have dry weather the rest of the week," Nash said, with the chance of a rain-snow mix Friday.

Sunday night's low temperature will be in the lower 20s, with a high of 30 degrees for Monday and a low in the teens Monday night. Tuesday's high will be in the upper 30s with a low of the mid 20s Tuesday night.

Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be in the upper 30s.
