Storms bring inch of rain or more to Long Island

An inch of rain or more fell on parts of Long Island Thursday as a line of storms moved through, forecasters said.

National Weather Service meteorologist Joey Picca of the Upton-based service said the storms hovered near the Nassau-Suffolk border, running slightly northeast from Wantagh to Huntington, from about 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., dropping about an inch of rain over that period.

Picca said Bethpage reported a rainfall total of 1.1 inch and Farmingdale .92 inches.

"It's not out of the question that some areas might have gotten up to one-and-a-half inches," Picca said.

Late afternoon rain was likely on the North Shore, around Port Jefferson, and the North and South forks, he said, as the storm field moved north away from Long Island.

Some flooding was reported with partial lane closings on the Long Island Expressway, the Wantagh State Parkway and the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, according to the State Department of Transportation.

Neither Suffolk nor Nassau police reported specific calls for flooding, spokeswomen for each department said.

An urban flood advisory issued by the weather service expired at 1:45 p.m.
