The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather alert has been issued for parts of Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Strong thunderstorms are expected to hit eastern Nassau and Suffolk, according to the weather statement.

Meteorologists say that small hail, very heavy rain, and winds up to 40 mph are expected with the storm, the report said.

Earlier Thursday, state officials warned Long Islanders and residents of the metropolitan area to stay indoors to avoid breathing unhealthy air caused by high levels of ozone pollution.
