Cooler temperatures should arrive Sunday with the chance of showers off and on through the week, ending a string of days with high heat and sweltering humidity across Long Island and New York City.

But Sunday's clear skies and comfortable temperatures will provide a brief respite before a chance of more rain later this week.

Rainfall overnight from storms that moved through the region Saturday into Sunday morning was recorded between a quarter- to a half-inch across Long Island. Rain totals at LaGuardia Airport were about .25 inches while rain totals reached .31 Islip and .39 in Farmingdale, according to The National Weather Service.

Sunday's forecast is for mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 70s and lower humidity.

The cooler temperatures should last through the week, with highs in the low to mid-70s and a chance of showers each day until the weekend.
