Superstorm Sandy: What LIers need to know

TRAIN SERVICE

Long Island Rail Road service resumed between Jamaica Station and Atlantic Terminal. The LIRR was to add service between Jamaica and Penn Station late Wednesday or Thursday morning.

Hourly service from Ronkonkoma and Great Neck to Penn Station is to start Thursday. Off-peak fares will be in effect until full service is restored and no onboard penalty fees will be charged. Riders should go to mta.info for up to date information.

Full service will not be back until the LIRR assesses infrastructure damage and power is restored.

Some Metro-North service also was to be restored Wednesday.

LONG ISLAND BUS SERVICE

NASSAU COUNTY

NICE bus is operating on several routes. Fares will not be collected. Limited Able-Ride service is available. For details, go to nicebus.com.

SUFFOLK COUNTY

Suffolk County Transit buses are to return to regular service Thursday.

ROADS

Many local roads remained closed because of flooding, debris, downed power lines or fallen trees. Many traffic signals are not working because of power outages; drivers should approach those intersections with caution.

In Southampton, Dune Road is open only to business owners with 4-wheel-drive vehicles.

AIRPORTS

Kennedy Airport opened Wednesday to very limited service. The AirTrain remains suspended, but buses are operating. LaGuardia will open Thursday at 7 a.m. with limited flight schedules. Southwest Airlines and USAirways have resumed operations at Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Travelers should contact their airlines for delay or cancellation information before going to any airport.

NEW YORK CITY

Private cars with fewer than three people are banned from entering Manhattan on the four East River bridges between 6 a.m. and midnight through Friday.

The Holland, Midtown and Hugh L. Carey Brooklyn Battery tunnels will remain closed.

Limited subway service was to resume Thursday. City buses are running at full service, but are crowded to accommodate additional riders who normally take subways. There will be no subway service below 34th Street in Manhattan.

POWER

LIPA is working to restore power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. Customers should be prepared for service outages lasting several more days, officials said.

Gas leaks should be reported to National Grid by calling 800-490-0045.

SCHOOLS

Many Long Island school districts expect to remain closed Thursday and possibly Friday. A few schools on the North Fork opened Wednesday. For the most up-to-date closure information, go to newsday.com.

WATER AND SEWER

* Residents in Long Beach should not drink the water. The city's sewage system also is shut down.

* The Bay Park Sewage treatment plant in East Rockaway shut down Wednesday after 9 feet of seawater breached the facility.

* The Water Authority of Western Nassau County advised customers that their water is safe to drink, but asked that use be limited because the agency is relying on emergency generators. When telephone service is restored, customers with problems should call 516-327-4100.

* Water supplies from Suffolk Water Authority are safe to drink, agency officials said. The exception is on Fire Island, where power was shut off Sunday. For more information customers should call 631-698-9500.

* The Suffolk health department advised anyone with a well that was covered by flooding to drink bottled water and have the well tested.

TRASH PICKUP

Some towns resumed trash pickup. Check each town's website for updated information.

STAYING WARM

*Gather together. A crowded room becomes warmer than one with just a few people inside. Close off the house, using only a few essential rooms.

* Take advantage of the sun. Open curtains and shades to let the sun's warmth into the house, then close them at dusk.

* Wear extra, loose layers of clothing and a head cover.

* Use layers of blankets. Create a tent of blankets over your bed to trap warm air inside. Families should share a bed to increase warmth.

* Do not use electrical generators inside homes or garages.

* Do not prop open the oven door or keep oven burners on.
