The second day of October brought a record-high temperature of 84 degrees, breaking the 11-year-old record at Long Island MacArthur Airport by 4 degrees, the National Weather Service said yesterday.
Tuesday's temperature at the Ronkonkoma airport hit 81, 2 degrees shy of the date's record high. "The air mass hasn't changed much" from Tuesday, meteorologist David Stark said from the service's Upton office.
The reason for the unseasonably warm weather during the past week or so is a lingering high-pressure system that is bringing in warm, southerly air.
Stark said that high will stick around for a few more days, with the incoming winds shifting from the southwest and west to the east.
When that happens, Stark said, expect some cooling off.
Typically, when ocean air blows toward Long Island, the temperatures drop, he said.
"We'll still be in the 70s, which is warm for October," Stark said.
The weekend forecast also calls for warm, sunny weather with a chance of rain, as high as 40 percent tomorrow night, the service said.
