Local airports appeared to lift ground stops late Wednesday that had been ordered earlier as heavy rain and thunderstorms hit Long Island and New York City.

Airports throughout the northeast, including JFK, were set to end ground stops at least 11 p.m. according to the Federal Aviation Administration website. Earlier in the evening departures from LaGuardia Airport were delayed an average of more than three hours due to thunderstorms, the FAA said.

Just after 11 p.m., neither airport was listed as experiencing any weather-related delays or ground stops, according to the FAA website.

Thursday afternoon's forecast calls for another chance of showers and thunderstorms, Tomasini said.

Thursday's high will be in the mid 80s, and Friday should be slightly cooler, with abundant sunshine. The weekend is expected to be clear and sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 80s.
