Lightning from a powerful thunderstorm late Wednesday struck Longwood High School in Yaphank, leading to a "smoke condition" in the gymnasium ceiling, authorities said.

School officials said the high school will be open as usual Thursday morning.

Yaphank firefighters responded about 10:17 p.m. and brought the incident under control in about 20 minutes, fire officials said.

There was no indication of injuries or information about the extent of damage at the school.

A Brookhaven Town fire marshal at the scene Wednesday night declined to comment.

A storm finished passing through Long Island by 9 p.m., which also marked the end of a severe thunderstorm watch issued earlier by the National Weather Service. WCBS reported flooding on the Long Island Expressway in Queens near Ozone Park and in northern New Jersey.

There were reports of minor road flooding and downed trees on Long Island, but PSEG Long Island was reporting power service at nearly 100% late Wednesday.

A heat advisory had been issued Wednesday for New York City and northeast New Jersey but Long Island had also seen high temperatures break the 90 degree mark. Unseasonably high temperatures have been in the region for several days.

A major temperature drop was forecast.

High temperatures for Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be in the low to mid-60s with lows in the 50s. Showers are likely Thursday, while Friday will be partly cloudy and there will be showers throughout the Memorial Day weekend, the weather service said.
