A cold front and breezy conditions are hitting Long Island on Thursday, with gusty winds and the potential for scattered thunderstorms, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service is predicting a cloudy day with wind gusts of up to 35 mph and a high in the low 80s. The storms are expected around noon on the western part of the island, hitting the East End at 5 p.m., and could bring winds in excess of 58 mph.

“Right now, it’s looking like a scattered, broken line of showers, storms that could come through with the front,” said meteorologist Bryan Ramsey of the National Weather Service.

Dangerous rip currents are a possibility for all Atlantic Ocean beaches from Thursday morning through Thursday evening. A small craft advisory is in place from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday, discouraging mariners from operating on Long Island waters.

Long Islanders can expect heavy downpours during the thunderstorms, but they are expected to move quickly across the region. The weather service is not anticipating any flood concerns.
