Slight chance of showers forecast for Wednesday after more than 1 inch fell Tuesday

There is only a "slight chance" of showers and thunderstorms" after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said, after the second day of the workweek saw at least moderate patches of rain.

The high on Wednesday is expected to be about 83 degrees, and the risk of rainfall remains about 20 percent until 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday were expected to be sunny, with highs running from 80 to 84 degrees.

Long Island has been in a moderate drought, and Tuesday's rainfall totaled only 1.05 inches.

That brought the total amount of rainfall since June 1 to 6.88 inches, the National Weather Service said.

That is 2.22 inches less than normal, though an improvement over last year, when only 5.22 inches had fallen by that date.

Early Tuesday morning, heavy rains soaked Long Island, with wind gusts as high as 40 mph, the National Weather Service said.

One potential hazard that arose on Tuesday -- very high riptides -- was expected to persist until about 8 p.m., with the surf seen swelling four feet to six feet, the weather service said.
