A heat advisory remains in effect for Long Island until 10 p.m. Thursday but a better weekend is forecast for the region, the National Weather Service said.

A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms are called for Thursday evening before 8 p.m., with the temperature dipping down to around 74 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Thursday in Islip, the thermometer reading rose to 89 degrees with relative humidity at 65% just before 4 p.m. The average high temperature for the date is 83 degrees.

Three Suffolk beaches, Gold Star Battalion Beach in Huntington, Amityville Beach, and Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore are closed to bathing due to high bacteria levels. The beaches will reopen when tests show that bacteria levels are acceptable, Suffolk health officials said.

Temperatures on Friday are expected to moderate, with mostly sunny skies and a high of about 84 degrees, the weather service said.

Saturday's forecast is similar, but with a slight chance of showers after 2 p.m.

Showers are possible Sunday as well, but with a high temperature of around 87 degrees, forecasters said.
