Long Island, New York City and much of the region will again have extreme heat, high humidity and unhealthy air quality on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued air quality health advisories for Wednesday, from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., for ozone on Long Island, as well as in New York City and Rockland and Westchester counties.

Heat advisories remain in effect for the area as well, until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the weather service said. Feels-like temperatures could exceed 100 degrees in portions of Long Island on Wednesday.

"This level of long-duration heat, with little overnight relief, affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration," the weather service said.

The temperature at Islip reached a record-tying 96 degrees on Tuesday, a sweltering all-time high for the date that also was reached in 2002, according to weather service meteorologist Joe Pollina with the agency's Upton office. The heat index for the area, or the feels-like temperature due to high humidity, soared to 104 degrees.

The temperature at LaGuardia Airport hit an all-time high of 100 degrees on Tuesday, Pollina said. The previous daily record of 97 was set in 1949.

Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott advised in a statement that residents limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially young children, seniors, those who exercise outdoors and those with preexisting respiratory or heart problems.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a cold front will sweep in on Wednesday evening. That will bring rain with it, which may last through Friday afternoon. Friday looks to be dramatically, unseasonably cooler, with a high in the low 70s.
