Long Island weather: Fair skies, temperatures in 70s for back-to-school week

Sunshine and blue skies this week is expected to welcome students back to school as the mild weather continues.

Highs in the upper 70s and lows in the upper 50s and 60s with a light breeze is forecast for most of Nassau and Suffolk counties, where thousands of schoolchildren and educators will return to classrooms beginning Tuesday.

"Anyone who has an outdoor activity should be good with these temperatures that are seasonable or just a degree or two below seasonal," said Bryan Ramsey, a metrologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

Even if you're not sending your kids back for the 2025-26 school year, Ramsey said the waters should be relatively calm and the temperatures will make for enjoyable beach days. 

"It will feel pretty nice out there in the afternoon. There's really nothing keeping anyone from doing any activities," Ramsey said.   

The only real threat of rain occurs Thursday evening into Friday morning with scattered showers possible Islandwide. Even then, it should clear out by Saturday. 

There won't be much to disturb the idyllic days with little wind beyond a light breeze.

"We're sitting pretty there too," Ramsey said.
