Weather forecast: Showers linger most of week

Get that yard work done over the next day or so. After Tuesday, a stretch of hit-and-miss rain showers will linger into the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

The service's Upton office predicts between a 30 to 80 percent chance of rain from Wednesday afternoon through daytime Saturday as a backdoor cold front pushes across the area Tuesday morning.

The region sees a series of outgoing and incoming systems that create cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 50s to low 60s, mostly through Saturday.

High pressure off the coast of New England will build Wednesday, and a warm front lifts back to the north Thursday. A cold front then approaches slowly on Friday and moves across Friday night into Saturday.

The precipitation moves off Long Island by Saturday night, as high pressure slowly returns, the service said.

Tuesday is mostly cloudy with a high of 63 and east winds up to 16 mph.

Starting Wednesday, after noon, rain enters the picture. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent with a high in the mid 60s.

Throughout the remainder of the week, patchy fog also is expected to accompany the rain.

Wednesday night the chance of rain is 60 percent.

Thursday calls for a 20 to 30 percent chance of rain; Friday as high as 80 percent; Saturday 40 percent.

By Sunday, temperatures are expected to be in the mid 60s with sunny skies.
