Parts of Long Island are under the risk of flash flooding Tuesday evening as scattered showers and strong thunderstorms moved through the region, the National Weather Service said.
Temperatures reached highs in the mid to high 80s Tuesday, but due to the humidity, the heat index felt as high as 96 degrees.
"The good news is it's not going to be prolonged, like what we saw beginning of last week," Stark said. "While it's going to remain muggy tonight, the temperatures aren't going to stay high much past sunset."
Overnight, there could be more showers and thunderstorms, which may contain localized, heavy rainfall.
The service forecasts potential winds up to 58 mph, which can damage trees and power lines, Stark said. But the most likely location of such damaging winds will be western Long Island, around New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley, the weather service said.
The severe weather threat ends around 11 p.m. once winds and the storm dies down.
Wednesday may see scattered showers in the morning and early afternoon, but should be mostly clear after 2 p.m. with temperatures in the mid-80s, Stark said.
Thursday will be similar with clear skies and highs in the upper 80s.
Friday, Independence Day, will be the "nicest, most comfortable" day of the week with highs in the mid-80s, Stark said, adding, "Humidity levels are going to be held down, and we're anticipating mostly clear skies for pretty much the whole day on July 4 and into the evening."
