Long Island forecast: Snow exits, leaves freezing temps

Light to heavy snowfall spread over Long Island Friday night, bedeviling motorists with treacherous, slippery roads, the National Weather Service said.

A winter weather advisory was in effect for Nassau and western Suffolk through 10 p.m. Friday, and through 1 a.m. Saturday for eastern Suffolk, bringing up to 4 inches of snow and causing limited visibility.

“The back edge of the snow is moving through Nassau County,” meteorologist Nelson Vaz said shortly before 9 p.m. “Suffolk County got the moderate to heavy snow moving through right now, but by about 10 or 11 p.m., it’s going to be moving east of the Twin Forks.”

Most of Nassau was covered with about 2 inches of snow, he said, but Suffolk would see 2 to 3 inches, with 4 in isolated spots. Sayville had the most, at 2.8 inches, Vaz said.

Below-freezing temps will dominate much of Saturday, when “a little disturbance” could bring some afternoon to early evening snow showers, the meteorologist said.

Although the temperature could reach the upper 30s Saturday, Vaz said, wind gusts of up to 30 mph will make the day feel like it’s 20 degrees or so.
