Long Island weather: Weekend brings rain, highs near 50

Along with temperatures of around 50 degrees, the weekend is bringing “an extended period” of rain to Long Island, thanks to a slow-moving front, forecasters say.
Leaving a partially washed-out weekend aside, the main concern was that moderate to heavy rain could lead to urban and poor drainage flooding, the National Weather Service said, though precise timing and location for the heaviest precipitation had not yet been pinned down.
The forecast was for the Island to end up with 2 to 2 1⁄4 inches of rain, the weather service said in a late Friday afternoon tweet.
Though there could be some light showers earlier, the most likely scenario was for light rain to start Saturday evening, with periods of moderate to heavy rainfall through Sunday, said David Stark, weather service meteorologist. There was also potential for precipitation to continue overnight Sunday into the earliest hours of Monday, he said.
Saturday was forecast to warm up to 49 degrees or so, with Sunday looking at highs of around 50. The normal high for this time of year is 40 degrees.
