Mild temperatures and relatively clear skies on Saturday and Sunday will make the holiday weekend pleasant, meteorologists said, but colder weather and precipitation is on track to arrive early Monday — and it may bring a dose of snow.
“Tomorrow will be a pretty nice day, lots of sunshine,” National Weather Service meteorologist Adrienne Leptich said of the start of the weekend, adding that temperatures will reach the high 50s on Long Island.
Winds will range from 9 to 11 mph, the weather service said, and the night will be cool, about 38 degrees for much of the area, cooler even on the East End.
Similar weather is expected for Easter Sunday, Leptich said, and it will be dry all day and in the mid-50s. But the evening will see a sharp dip to around freezing, or 32 degrees, as precipitation comes in, favorable conditions for snow.
“It actually looks like there will be enough cold air in place for some snow,” Leptich said. “The timing is a little tricky still. We have it starting probably around or shortly after midnight Sunday and continuing into Monday morning.”
Leptich said that snow in early April is not common but not unheard of either, adding that there have been nine days since 1963 that measurable snow has fallen at MacArthur Airport between April 1 and 12.
The weather service said the chance of snow Sunday into Monday is about 40 percent and cloudy skies after the snowfall stops will give way to sunshine amid a high temperature of 47 degrees.
