Weather: Long Island faces 'fire spread' risk

Long Island faces an "enhanced risk of fire spread" through Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

Winds from the west and southwest from 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 25 to 30 mph, along with low relative humidity levels, will result in conditions favorable for the spread of brush fires, the service's Upton office said in a special weather statement covering most of Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The risk will diminish by this evening as humidity levels increase and winds subside, the service said.

With these favorable conditions for the "rapid spread of brush fires," anyone who spots a fire or plume of smoke is advised to "immediately" report it, according to the special weather statement.
