Long Island weather: Rain, thunderstorms forecast into Thursday; flash flooding possible

Long Island will see another stretch of rainy days for the last week of July, with forecasters saying they expect to receive up to a half an inch of total rainfall.

The National Weather Service said that Monday will be fairly dry and reach an average high of 83, or remain in the lower 80s.

On Tuesday, Long Island will begin to see a stretch of "unsettled weather," with the potential for flash flooding, meteorologist Bryan Ramsey said.

"Other than that, the only other hazard we're looking at is maybe some minor coastal flooding mid-to-late week with a low-pressure system passing up the coast," Ramsey said.

The strongest rainfall will occur Tuesday afternoon and evening into Wednesday morning. It is too soon to predict which areas will receive the heaviest rainfall amounts, Ramsey said.

Long Island should expect a continuation of storms Wednesday through Thursday with highs in the upper 70s.

"The next couple days will be cooler because of the rain," Ramsey said. "So we'll actually be below seasonal [temperatures] through Thursday."

Conditions should be clear by Friday, with highs in the low 80s, typical summer weather for the last day of July.
