Showers are forecast on Long Island for Sunday but sunny skies should make their first appearance of the new year Monday.

The National Weather Service said Saturday evening that there is a 60% chance of precipitation on Sunday. Fog, dense in areas, overnight Saturday into Sunday, is expected to dissipate by 9 a.m. Sunday.

The high temperature for Sunday is expected to be near 54 degrees — the normal high for the date in Islip is only 41 degrees. Sunday should have a west wind of 3 to 7 mph.

There is a slight chance of rain Sunday night, mixing with snow after 11 p.m. as the low temperature is expected to be only about 28 degrees.

Monday will start out mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, the weather service said. The high temperature should be about 34 degrees.

The weather service says Tuesday should be sunny, Wednesday will have a 50% chance of rain, Thursday will be partly sunny and Friday will have a chance of rain and snow.

High temperatures for the four days are expected to be in the low 40s except on Wednesday when the thermometer could hit 50 degrees.
