Mild temps last through New Year's Day and a mostly dry New Year's Eve, forecasters said

Friday will arrive with above-average warmth once again, bringing mild temperatures that will last into New Year’s Day, forecasters said.

Temperatures for the last day of 2021 will reach a high of 50, ten degrees above normal, said Jay Engle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

They will drop just a few degrees for New Year's Eve and rain, due to fall most of Saturday, should hold off until after midnight for revelers both on Long Island New York City.

"So we end the year and begin the new year on a warm note," Engle said.

For both places, on Saturday, rain is likely — a 90% chance — throughout most of the day into the evening, the weather service reported, with a 50% possibility of rain into Sunday. Both days temperatures will continue to be mild, likely the mid 50s, the weather service reported.

Sunday, conditions begin to change and there is a possibility of a rain/snow mix Sunday night before a dramatic two-day cool-down for the region, forecasters said.

Engle said temperatures on Long Island will take a dive Sunday night into Monday.

"By Monday morning, we’re going to be down into the 20s across much of the Island," Engle said. "Temperatures on Monday won’t get out of the 30s."

Temperatures will begin to rise, however, as the week goes on and the sun could even make an appearance Monday and Tuesday, when the daytime high will be about 40 and the low will be about 32 degrees.

Highs will begin to go up through to the high 40s starting Wednesday although clouds will take over and rain may return Thursday.
