Below freezing temperatures and increasing clouds overnight on Long Island will be followed by rain Wednesday, with two inches of snow possible early Friday, the National Weather Service said.
The low Tuesday night will dip to about 26 degrees before rising to 37 early Wednesday, the weather service said. Up to a half-inch of rain is forecast for Wednesday with a high near 45. The clouds begin to clear at night when the low will be 37.
Thursday starts out sunny with a high of 39 but conditions will deteriorate overnight with a 70% chance of snow after 1 a.m. Friday, the weather service said. At least two inches of accumulating snow is predicted with slight chance of more than six inches falling.
"This looks to be a quick moving system, so the probability of a major (1 ft+) snowfall is very low," the weather service said Tuesday night.
Snow continues through 1 p.m. Friday before mostly sunny skies return with a high near 31, forecasters said. Friday night will be mostly clear with a low of 20.
