Forecast: Florence to drench LI Monday into Tuesday

Long Islanders will want to gear up for some showers, starting in the overnight Monday hours and lasting through Tuesday, when heavier rain could also enter the picture, forecasters say.

The system associated with the remnants of Tropical Depression Florence will be just a wisp compared to the long-lasting deluge the storm unleashed on the Carolinas over the weekend.

Look for highest chances of rain from around 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, said Carlie Buccola, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upon, based on the late Monday afternoon forecast.  

While Long Island could see an inch to an inch and a half of precipitation, possibly higher with any thunderstorms, the overall heavier rainfall is anticipated for areas to the north and west, the weather service said.

“It isn’t going to be a big deal. We get rainfall like this dozens of times a year.” said Patrick Maloit, also a meteorologist in Upton. 

The main threat for the Island is for minor urban and poor drainage flooding, also with a low chance of localized flash flooding, according to a hazardous weather statement.

Tuesday, expected to warm up to the high 70s, also brings a high risk for rip currents at Atlantic beaches.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, then, look to feature most sunny skies, with temperatures rising to the 70s.
