Long Island weather: Dry, sunny start to the weekend

Friday is expected to bring dry, sunny skies on Long Island, warming up to the high 40s, forecasters say.

The day “will feature dry and breezy conditions,” with temperatures a few degrees below normal, which is 53 degrees, the National Weather Service said.

Also expected are winds in the morning from the northwest, gusting to near 30 mph, said Jay Engle, weather service meteorologist in Upton, based on the late afternoon Thursday forecast.

The overnight hours were forecast to be “dry and cold,” the weather service said, with temperatures dipping down to around 30 degrees.

Saturday brings a chance of showers — about 50 percent, mostly after noon — continuing into the overnight hours, with temperatures heading up to the low 50s.

Still, this is not expected to be “a washout for the weekend,” said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.

Winds will also be in the picture, with the weather service warning of strong winds potentially of around 40 mph, gusting up to 58 mph late Saturday night into Sunday.

Sunday could see some early morning showers, the weather service said, with skies becoming cloudy, then making way for some sun, with highs in the mid-50s.
