Long Islanders will want to have umbrellas handy Thursday morning, as forecasters say there’s a good chance for some showers.

There was an 80 percent chance for precipitation, primarily Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service’s late Wednesday afternoon forecast.

A coastal flood statement is in effect from 4 to 8 a.m. Thursday for Nassau County’s southern bays, predicting “brief minor flooding of the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline.”

Showers taper off from west to east, clearing the area by early to midafternoon, said Faye Marrone, a weather service meteorologist based in Upton. Temperatures were forecast to head up to the mid-50s, which is seasonable for this time year.

Winds then start to pick up in midafternoon to early evening, gusting up to around 28 to 33 mph and ushering in some colder air, the weather service said. Lows overnight into Friday morning were expected to dip to the mid-30s.

Friday looks to be sunny and breezy, heading up to the high 40s, but feeling colder thanks to wind chill, as those gusts were forecast to continue. The overnight low into Saturday was expected to be around 33 degrees.
