Rain will be moving into Long Island Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Rising temperatures will accompany the rain with the high reaching close to 50 degrees on Sunday.
"We're forecasting rain to move through, mainly coming in the morning and then tapering off early tomorrow night," said Joe Pollina, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.
After a sunny and cool Monday with high temperatures back in the low 40s, more precipitation is forecast for the region on Tuesday, including the possibility of light snow, when a coastal storm moves in overnight.
In an advisory Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said it was tracking a low-pressure system that could bring .1 inches of snow to parts of Nassau and western Suffolk closest to Long Island Sound. New York City could see up to .3 inches of snow. A significant snowfall was predicted for Orange and Putnam County and the Lower Hudson Valley.
The weather service said in the advisory the system should bring mainly rain for coastal Long Island but "a few tenths [of snow] cannot be ruled out."
Pollina said the storm “might start off as some snow, or a light rain-snow mix,” and change to rain by Tuesday morning. It could turn back to a wintry mix when temperatures drop Tuesday night, he added.

“We continue to monitor the storm and if it shifts further offshore, that might mean more in the way of snow for our area,” he said of Tuesday's system. “If it’s closer to the coast, that might mean more in the way of rain, which is already what we’re seeing.”
The advisory said: "Uncertainty still remains with exact track of the coastal low," and a "reasonable worst case scenario" would bring 3 to 5 inches of snow to coastal Connecticut and New York City.
“It’s still a few days out, so things can change through then,” Pollina said.
