A slow-moving warm front will keep Long Island soggy through the rest of the weekend, with periods of rain continuing into early Monday before conditions improve, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is expected to persist throughout Sunday, with showers lingering into Monday morning, said Joe Pollina, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton. By Monday afternoon, most of the area should be mainly dry as the system moves out, he said.

“It’s going to be on the chilly side for this time of year,” Pollina said. High temperatures on Sunday are forecast to reach only the upper 50s, similar to Saturday, he said. On Monday, temperatures should rebound to near normal for this time of year, with highs in the lower 70s, Pollina said.

Rainfall totals across Long Island are expected to range from about 1½ inches to 2¼  inches, Pollina said, with the heaviest amounts likely toward the East End.

While there remains up to a 50% chance of showers Monday morning, the risk drops to just a slight chance by the afternoon, Pollina said, offering some relief for Memorial Day plans later in the day.

The weather service has issued high surf and high rip current risk advisories for the South Shore, warning of dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion through Sunday evening.

Some events across Long Island have been canceled or postponed because of the forecast, including the drone show at Jones Beach State Park.

Originally scheduled for Sunday night, the drone performance will take place at 9 p.m. on Monday, Newsday previously reported. Attendees can expect up to 1,000 drones to light up the sky during the 20-minute show with "patriotic symbols and imagery to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday and honor military personnel," the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has said.

The FourLeaf Air Show, which typically kicks off the unofficial summer season this weekend, has been moved to July 5-6 to coincide with Independence Day celebrations.
